Critical Thinking with Chess
Students engage their critical thinking muscles in this interactive, & strategic chess class. They learn and analyze winning strategies, games, and individual moves while playing chess and solving puzzles.
In this fun and interactive class, children watch popular games played by champion, and their own games, and discuss and debate the pros and cons of each player’s game. Further they brainstorm better moves & strategies, and create and solve chess puzzles of increasing complexity. Students find this small group based strategic thinking class to be highly engaging & enriching.

Course Details
Students learn the game of chess, mastering many strategies with practice in each session
They analyze and evaluate chess moves & strategies, and come up with the best moves & plans.
Improve children’s problem solving, analytical, observational, and strategic thinking skills, as they solve a variety of chess puzzles of increasing complexity.
Foster positive interactions, and healthy competition among students as they work hard to become better players and champions.
Engage in higher order and strategic thinking as students create their own chess puzzles, and present their analysis of popular chess games.
Students learn the basics of chess, review rules, and strategies and engage in simple skill assessment exercises in the first class. In the following weeks, children learn and analyze more chess strategies appropriate for their skill level. In each class students play against each other and engage in interactive problem solving exercises, putting their learning into practice. Further children solve puzzles, play against robots, and each other in teams, fostering collaborative thinking and better play strategy development.
As children develop comfort & fluency in solving puzzles, we invite them to challenge each other and the entire class by creating their own puzzles. Lastly children review and analyze popular games of chess champions in class.
Students are given many opportunities to present their own strategies, their analysis of a chess game or a strategy in class. Students are encouraged to ask questions, discuss, and provide feedback to their peers in response.Children love challenging themselves, and engaging in healthy competition, and inspire each other to stretch & flex their thinking muscles in this fun, interactive, & engaging class
Our teachers are highly qualified and experienced, expert chess players, with exceptional ability to interact and engage young students online
55 minutes per class once or twice a week, and additional 1 to 2 hours per week, outside of class for studying chess games and strategies if interested.
5-15 minutes daily practice homework. Homework is optional, students are encouraged to practice daily, post their work, and reach out to the instructor for clarifications.
Rough notebook or paper, pens/pencils, color pencils or crayons etc. Parents will be notified ahead of class when additional items are needed for a class activity
Reference material, and external resource information will be provided
Results of a formative assessment based on student’s mastery of the game, and participation in class activities, exercises, and quizzes, and their presentations, will be provided at the end of the session.
FAQ
This is an interactive, instructor led small group online class that will be conducted on a zoom meeting. Students are given many opportunities to share, and interact with peers, and teachers in class. Each child is given individual attention when needed, to ensure that every child grasps the concepts, and participates actively in class.
All children with basic to advanced knowledge of chess are eligible to join the class. We asses the skill level of each child and engage the class and individual child accordingly.
We review the basics of the game, review rules, and strategies and assess each child’s level using simple exercises. Further, we engage in many fun and interactive activities, to build rapport among students, and between each student & instructor. It is very essential for all students to attend the first class of each session.
Yes, parents will be provided with a post lesson summary of the strategies they learnt, and exercises practiced in each class, through email, WhatsApp & course reference page. Further parents will be notified in advance, when students need any other learning materials/supplies for class activities.
Research suggests that children learn and engage better in small group classrooms consisting of learners with varying levels of expertise. Having said that we strive to best serve the learning needs of each child, by following their lead – we differentiate the learning activities and exercises, and adapt & evolve our teaching methods continuously, based on children’s response & engagement
Teachers are available to clarify students’ doubts or questions for an extra 10 minutes, towards the end of class. Further students, or parents on behalf of students, may reach out to us on course email (which will be provided to enrolled students), for questions/clarifications
