Critical Thinking with Video Games

This novel course enriches the critical thinking prowess, of middle school students as they engage in critical analysis of video games, and problem solving exercises in video game design. Students analyse the strategies, user experience, evaluate the design, discuss, & debate the best and worst parts of popular educational video games in this fun, and engaging course.

Youngsters engage in many novel, and interesting video game-centered learning activities in each class. We bring popular video games like minecraft, roblox, fortnite, simcity, & more each week, and delve into behind the scene activities like game planning, designing obstacle courses, developing themes, characters, weapons, strategies, missions, and so on through interactive exercises and discussions in class. Tweens and teens have fun, interacting and brainstorming about their favourite video game while engaging in critical thinking, meta cognition, and reflective learning.

Course Details

Develop critical analysis skills – students analyse various aspects of a game, and how it all comes together to engage different users, and sustains their focus & interest.

By engaging in defining parameters for user engagement and entertainment, evaluating user experience, and comparing & contrasting pros and cons of different video games, students develop critical evaluation and problem solving skills.

Develop meta cognition, and mindful awareness as students practice, and reflect upon their interaction with video games

Enrich youngsters imagination, planning, and design skills through interesting video game design, and analysis exercises.

Develop positive, fun, and productive interaction with video games.

Foster positive interactions, brainstorming, and collaboration among peers

Students explore and engage in popular educational video game analysis, and critical,  creative thinking exercises in this class. In each class we study an educational video game, and reflect on its theme, design, and its level of engagement. Further learners discuss and debate its strengths & weaknesses, uniqueness, and engage in related creative exercises like ideating extensions – adding new weapons/tools, characters, improving controls & user experience, modifying obstacles etc, and creating their own inspired model of an educational video game.

The classes are highly interactive, and lively with discussions, debates, imaginations, and presentations. Students engage in meta cognition, as they reflect on their own experience, and interaction with video games in this innovative course, further the learning exercises bring mindful awareness to the act of video gaming in class and beyond.

Youngsters draw inspiration from each other, as they engage in collaborative problem solving, and validate each others ideas, and solutions in our positive, fun, and interactive classrooms. Most importantly, students bring critical thinking, meta cognition, creativity, collaboration, awareness, & problem solving skills to the fore, and strengthen them in this mindful engagement with video games!

55 minutes per class once or twice a week, and an estimated 30 minutes to 2 hour per week outside of class for home work

As homework students are asked to record various parameters and journal their interaction with video games whenever they play. Homework is optional, students are encouraged to practice & post their work, and reach out to the instructor for questions/clarifications.

Rough notebook or paper, pens, colors etc. Students will be notified ahead of class when additional items are needed for class activity

Reference material, and external resource information will be provided & updated regularly to reinforce learning with ongoing practice

Formative assessment will be provided at the end of the session based on each child participation, level of engagement, interaction and the work they generate in class an homework.

FAQ

This is an interactive, instructor led small group online class that will be conducted over a zoom session. Students are given many opportunities to share, and interact with peers, and teachers in class. Each student is given individual attention when needed to ensure that every child grasps the concepts, and participates actively in class.

Video games enhance children’s imagination, critical thinking, planning, design skills when they play and engage mindfully.

All middle school benefit from this course, as they engage with video games in postive, productive, and creative ways. This course not only enhances children’s critical thinking, and problem solving skills but also promotes meta cognition, and mindful awareness to their gaming engagement.

The activities and exercises during the first class are largely geared towards understanding students’ thinking abilities, perspective, approach, & prior knowledge. They also build rapport among students, and between each student & instructor. It is very essential for all students to attend the first class of each session.

Yes, a summary of the concepts taught, and exercises practiced in  class, will be provided for students/parents to review through email, WhatsApp & the course reference page.

No, students do not play video games in this course, and they are not encouraged to play outside class as well. In fact, this course provides a platform for children to discuss & share their video game experience and engagement with peers. This practice equips students with  awareness, and meta cognition abilities, so their gaming becomes less addictive, and more creative.
