The Mindful Learning Space

Higher Order Thinking Skills

This cross-curricular enrichment course engages children in grades 3 to 5 in a variety of higher-order thinking tasks. Students complete activities in which they assemble, deduce, hypothesize, persuade, and imagine in the context of math, language arts, science, and social studies.

Students find this integrated course refreshing, fun, and engaging as we challenge them to think broad across subjects, and deep into each theme in novel ways. They engage in a variety of narrative, analytical, creative & evaluation exercises in class, interacting, and learning with peers.

Course Details

Students engage in higher order thinking – where they stretch their thinking beyond mere memorization of facts, comprehension of concept, and application of knowledge.

Students demonstrate higher order thinking – where they analyze, evaluate problems and solutions, and create new and better solutions.

Promote cross-curricular learning – students go across subject boundaries and develop deep conceptual understanding.

Foster positive interactions, brainstorming, and collaboration among peers

Engage children’s multiple intelligences and develop multifaceted thinking acumen by exposing them to a variety of problems involving cross-curricular themes.

In each class, students review cross curricular learning themes, and subject specific concepts relevant to their grade curriculum. Once students establish the learning context (lower order thinking – remembering, understanding & applying), they engage in a variety of higher order thinking activities and exercise individually and in groups.

A few examples of higher order thinking tasks include – planning, persuading, designing, deciding, interpreting, comparing & contrasting, evaluating pros and cons, creating, building, deducing, asking questions, strategising, and so on activities.

We provide many opportunities for students to discuss, & collaborate with peers in this highly interactive and engaging class. Students engage in individual and group based hands-on activities, worksheet based exercises, & play thinking games. We engage each child in activities that are appropriate to their age group, and skill level through differentiated learning exercises.

Children draw inspiration from each other, as they engage in collaborative problem solving, and validate each others’ ideas and solutions in our positive, fun and interactive classrooms. Most importantly, students develop the habit of complete, comprehensive understanding and solution building by engaging in higher order thinking exercises.
